VA non-service connected pension benefits with Aid & Attendance

If you or your spouse served in the military for at least 90 days, with at least one day during a war period, and did not have a dishonorable discharge; you may be eligible for financial assistance from the VA. As a veteran, with a spouse, requiring “aid and attendance”, you may be eligible to receive up to $2,266.00 per month (2020). A widower of a veteran, with no dependents, requiring “aid and attendance”, may be eligible to receive up to $1,209.00 per month (2020). Lesser benefit amounts are available for those requiring a decreased level of care. In addition to the service requirement and disability requirement, a veteran or their surviving spouse must meet asset and income requirements. A claimant’s countable assets must not exceed $129,094.00 (2020); however, the asset limit is not set in stone as the case with Medicaid and will certainly be less for a single claimant. The income limit is the maximum pension rate, which varies depending on marital status and required level of care; however, unreimbursed medical expenses are deducted from income. Unreimbursed medical expenses include caregiver services and assisted living or nursing home costs.
